Last year I served as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer in New Mexico at a non-profit organization which uses soccer programming as a vehicle to promote health and wellness among Native American youth.
I believe that labels can be harmful and we are too quick to judge our neighbors without getting a chance to know them.

I listen to people, even if were not close, I take the time to listen to their stories, what's bothering them, or just anything. Because I truly care.
I don't wanna see anymore kids be afraid to do why they wanna do.

I buy coffee and water everytime I see a homeless a man outside of my Starbucks. His name is John, he's a veteran, and his dog Biscuit is his best friend.
I volunteer at a community bike shop, helping to make our city safe and accessible for all.

Last semester I studied in Cape Town, South Africa. While abroad I volunteered for an organization that works with women and children infected with and/or affected by HIV/AIDS. This wonderful opportunity allowed me to work with youth living in Khayelitsha, one of the largest and most impoverished townships in South Africa. Throughout my time with the organization I implemented a program called Art for Action which exposed the youth to various forms of creative expression.

I volunteer at a shelter near my school once a week so the homeless children who are staying at the shelter can have time and space to play around and simply be kids.
Because I believe that the way a person looks should never stop you from finding out his or her story.

I took a gap year after high-school and traveled to a rural area of Ghana. While I was there I volunteered in an orphanage/school, where I taught 4th grade. At first I felt uncomfortable and under-qualified to teach these children, but soon realized that the orphanage could not afford to hire another teacher at that time--so I threw myself into the job. The accomplishments of those kids during my time teaching them is forever ingrained in my memory.
