Tell Us Your Good Deed

I am a 93-year-old native of North Carolina, and am a life-long democrat. At my age it's hard to get out and help others, but I've always tried to be kind to everyone. In my day, I helped with a lot of church functions and helped to raise my granddaughter.

My favorite way to unwind is to ride 50-100 miles on my bicycle

Why are you participating?

I may be a geek, but I don't watch TV or play World of Warcraft. The reasons why I'm a vegetarian are complex but don't include "to leave more meat for you." And performing in community theater, I've encountered all sorts of misinformed stereotypes.

I'm one of those people who's an all-around do-gooder. For example, even though people say you shouldn't give money to panhandlers on the street, I'll try to give a little money if I have some handy, because you just never really know what their situation is. I volunteer for various causes, and am concerned about information security and the right to free expression on the internet.

Why are you participating?

People are always judged by others and judging me in real life. Women are particularly subjected to artificially manufactured standards of beauty, and often judge each other, too! Do we REALLY need to extend all of this judgment and cruelty to the internet? I don't think so!

I am known as the Mayor in our town. I know nearly everyone! I love to give hugs, kisses, swim and dance. I would give anyone the shirt off my back if they needed it. I am legally blind from the albinism, but one would never know it!

Why are you participating?

I never use the word albino, I want people to see people who are albino otherwise known as albinism are regular people just like you and me. I just need to wear sunglasses outside and a hat. I also use a lot of sunscreen!! Plus, my parents really like this project idea!

I always help my lil brother because he can't see too good. I love when we go to events and there are lot of people who can't see there. I always help them get stuff, and pet their dogs.

Why are you participating?

My mommy wants me to! I also know everyone seems different, but really we are the same.

I love to help my family especially my little sister. She is deaf-blind. I like to help people. My fondest memory is helping another little boy learn to climb up the slides at the playground. I held his hand and told him where to put his feet. When he got to the top all the parents at the playground cheered. I was so happy that I could help him.

Why are you participating?

My mom says that this is a good way to help people and my sister. My sister is 5. She is deaf-blind and she can't walk yet. Sometimes people look at her funny. Mom says that is because they don't know her and are afraid of what they don't know. I think that is silly.

I try to volunteer as much as I possibly can. I always say that if every one of us gave at least 4 hours of our time a week to volunteer activities, there would be no end to the things that we could accomplish for those in need.

Why are you participating?

It's a GREAT idea and it's just the right thing to do. When I was younger, I was told that Photography wasn't a REAL career and I wasn't allowed to pursue it in school. Years and many false starts later, I have decided to pursue that dream.

I spent the last year volunteering at an animal shelter, a library and a free health clinic. I didn't get paid, but I got to have experiences that were worth much more than money. It's great to be NOT EVIL!
