Tell Us Your Good Deed

Three years ago, I met a second year student from North High School at a Sister-to-Sister Conference. I was listening to a group of girls describe issues that they were struggling with. Afterwards, a 15 year old girl approached me to state that she was having a difficult time in her math class and was concerned about passing the mathematics portion of the MCAS that following spring. It was a serendipitous moment. I saw a spark in this young woman and knew she would be successful. We met weekly for 7 months, and she not only passed the MCAS, but got As and Bs in her math class.

I am extremely fortunate to have the privilege to empower girls and young women to be STRONG, SMART, & BOLD. Using the expressive arts as a platform to have their voices heard (music, theatre, dance, poetry, storytelling, visual arts, graphic arts) girls can address the difficult challenges they face growing up in today's society: including bullying, body image, self-esteem, peer pressure and healthy relationships.

Why are you participating?

I am participating because I feel it is important to bring an awareness that labels and stereotyping can be limiting and in some cases, damaging.

I work with some of the coolest girls on Earth to help them learn all about science, math, engineering, and technology as well as gain important leadership skills. I also love to volunteer on organic farms and smile at strangers.

Of all the actions, seeing, hearing and speaking, the one that I control is what I say. The others I refuse to participate with. I have always loved locs, the hairstyle, and the positive energy of those that wear them. I currently do volunteer work with Art in the Park, Worcester, support Democracy, activate for a community where the institutions and the cultural life reflect that of its inhabitants.

Why are you participating?

Tell Us Your Good Deed

Too many times when I'm driving around, there's someone on a corner in need, holding up a a sign about being homeless, or in dire circumstances. Rarely do I have cash or change, but usually have snacks. I offer something to eat or drink that hasn't been opened. On the few ocassions that I haven't had anything suitable to offer, I have at least opened the window to say hello instead of ignoring them. And I make sure my kids understand the importance of acknowledging those that might need our help.

Why are you participating?

I've brushed off the impact of what the labels I've been given or incurred, mostly. But it can still sting when flung at someone as a dig. And it's so important to recognize your good and your deeds.
