Tell Us Your Good Deed

I gave advice to someone that completely shaped their life today.

Why are you participating?

I think nowadays everyone's so critical and judgmental of others especially since we live in a world where social media is everyone's haven.

I am a security officer in a large office. When the fire alarm sounded I carried a co workers dog outside.

Why are you participating?

To take a look at my happy self and discover what I can and can't change in order to increase happiness even further. Help others see that they can
choose which things they SEE, HEAR and SAY in a way that increases happiness.

Tell Us Your Good Deed

When I was a junior in high school, I founded a non-profit organization called Root Rescue. It provides health and beauty care products to local shelters and families in need. I know first hand that a person's outward appearance and hygiene are directly related to their confidence. I grew up in a family of substance abuse and my parents refused to provide the money for hair and skin related products. It's difficult to go into the world, whether it's school or the work force, without feeling confident about your appearance.

Tell Us Your Good Deed

I spent 13 years in Girl Scouts so I've always been a volunteer and I've had my share of experiences, but my most recent would be the InterVarsity ServeUp trip in New Orleans, LA. A group of students went down there for a week to volunteer in rebuilding the community and hearing stories of those affected by Hurricane Katrina. I feel as though those people helped me more.

Why are you participating?

Because labels don't define a person. It just makes it easier for other people to "understand" if you're known by a label. I am me and my labels will not stop me from helping others or pursuing my dream of becoming a doctor.

Tell Us Your Good Deed

I feel that I have been privileged in life to have everything I needed. I strive to show my siblings to never take what they have for granted. Unfortunately, we are falling into a time with economic disparity, where people neglect to notice that economic challenges of others, unless they are trying to do volunteering or community service. Often, volunteering is strictly a structured opportunity allowing people to feel good about themselves. This unpopular view is hard to accept for most but this reality can be seen once the system of giving back is seen.

Why are you participating?

I want to be part of the turnover of this generation; the accepting and uplifting transformation of a generation.

I volunteer as the assistant coordinator of the Brian Litz Memorial Scholarship Fund, we host a basketball alumni game every winter to honor and remember Brian. Brian was a canine officer in Florida who lost his life on the job. The money raised at the game through donations goes to the Scholarship Fund. Two scholarships are awarded each year to one senior on each of the basketball teams. The Agawam boys and girls varsity basketball teams vote each year for which senior is the all-around best teammate (like Brian was) and whichever senior gets the most votes receives the scholarship.

I try to do small things everyday for people I don't know. From buying someone I don't know a coffee to something like giving a homeless person a meal, every deed counts.

Why are you participating?

As Princess Diana said, "Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you."
